a barrel or two, and some extra shelves in your fridge for the finished
product, then you can learn how to brew beer at home as your next hobby.
The
good thing about beer is it has been around for thousands of years and
over that time the ingredients have barely changed so the ingredients
are very easy to come by. Most home brew beer is made up of water, malt
yeast and of course hops. Water is obviously the main ingredient and
can be up to 95% of the mixture, the malt which is dried out wheat,
barley or even sometimes rye is the second main ingredient. The malt is
what gives the beer the flavor, body and the color of that golden ale
we all know of. Then hops is added into the mixture - this is the spice
and what makes beer, beer. You could almost liken it to basil leaves in
a good pasta.. it gives it that edge. If it wasn;t for the hops in
beer, all beer would taste very similar and most likely be boring.
The hops in beer brings all the flavours together, it balances out the
sweetness of the malt with the yeast. Without yeast, the beer would be
inactive, stale and non alcoholic. It is the yeast in the mixure that
causes the fermenation process to create the alcohol in the brew.
